Ashley Lyon: Fleshing
October 15-November 22, 2013
Opening Reception:  October 17, 4:30-6:30 pm

Dowd Gallery, SUNY Cortland

Ashley Lyon, Alfred University's Turner Teaching Fellow, presents a body of new work in her upcoming solo exhibition Fleshing at SUNY Cortland's Dowd Gallery.

Ashley Lyon’s new body of work, Fleshing, focuses on the figure fragment and reveals the breadth of her investigations into the relationship between two-dimensional images and three-dimensional objects.  Her work is inspired by two-dimensional photographs of ordinary human bodies and archaeological artifacts and by found imagery and nuanced memories.  She never sculpts directly from live models.

Widely considered one of the most innovative second-generation artists to come out of the American ceramic studio movement, Wayne Higby also played an integral role in educating the ceramists of tomorrow. Associate professor at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design, Ezra Shales brings together a panel of artists who studied under Higby to discuss their teacher’s influence, their own work, and the direction of ceramics today. Artists on the panel include Kim Dickey, Joey Foster Ellis, and Micheal Jones McKean.
